Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis or Arteriosclerotic Vascular Disease (ASVD) is the condition in which an artery wall thickens as the result of a build-up of fatty materials such as cholesterol. It is commonly referred to as hardening or stiffening of the arteries. It is caused by the formation of multiple plaques within the arteries.
When arteries stiffen due to the onset of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure and pulse wave velocity increases. This can contribute to the onset of serious cardiovascular events.
Early detection of arterial stiffness allows us to improve it with treatment and life style changes thus reducing future patient risk and general health cost.
Pulse Wave Velocity, a non invasive method, is up to the present, the gold standard for determining arterial wall elasticity.
